Stinky Subject
Thursday, March 3, 2005
Delegates from China and 15 other countries came together in Beijing to discuss a rather stinky subject-PUBLIC TOILETS. At the World Toilet Summit, attendees were treated to seminars like "Toilet Management and Hygiene" and "The Human Toilet", as well as a tour of the city's toilet, which have been transforme to meet the international standards in anticipation of the 2008 Olympics, which will be held in Beijing. Outside the city, most of China's public toilets are mere holes in the ground, something the officials hope will change after the Summit.

Philippine Peso
The peso has been a floating currency since the 1950s. This means that the value is dictated by market forces. In the 1960s, the value of the peso was 0.50 US dollars. From there, it quickly devalued to around 25 peso = 1 US dollar following the fall of Ferdinand Marcos' regime. It would continue devaluation until Fidel Ramos would assume the presidency. During the 1997-1998 Asian financial crisis, the peso lost its value to 40+ peso to the US dollar and then became 50+ peso to the US dollar during the economic crisis in the time of President Estrada.

Greenland
Wednesday, March 2, 2005
How Greenland got its name isn't entirely clear. Erik the Red, the great explorer, might have been the first European to land in Greenland. Did he name it Greenland? Maybe. He might have found it greener than his homeland of Iceland.
We do know that Greenland was warmer (by a few degrees) a thousand years ago, when Erik the Red would have landed there.
This large island was claimed by Denmark for many years, until it became independent in 1979. In fact, it isn't even called Greenland anymore. The correct name of the now independent country is Kalaalit Nunaat.

Religion
Tuesday, March 1, 2005
